Lights, Camera, Forest: Tribal Women Transforming Narratives
Jungle Rani Initiative
The Jungle Rani Reporters initiative empowers young tribal women from Malkangiri, Odisha, to use filmmaking as a medium to document their communities and environment. Known as the 'Queens of the Forest,' these women preserve their cultural heritage by highlighting traditions, environmental practices, and stories that are often overlooked by mainstream media.

On December 24, the Desia Film Show in Bodbel village marked a historic moment for the community. Films created by Jungle Rani volunteers were showcased on a large projector screen, giving the villagers a chance to witness their lives and stories brought to life. For many attendees, it was their first time experiencing such an event, fostering a deep sense of pride and unity.
Empowering Tribal Women as Storytellers
The initiative focuses on training young women to become leaders and storytellers, addressing important issues such as forest governance and sustainable livelihoods. Through their films, these women inspire a sense of pride and agency within their communities. As Jayanti Buruda, Founder of the Bado Didi Union, aptly puts it:
Experts from Jamia Millia Islamia have conducted hands-on workshops to equip participants with the skills needed for impactful storytelling. Using accessible tools like smartphones, the training sessions cover essential techniques such as story structuring, conducting interviews, and voice-over narration. Ongoing field-based support ensures that participants continue to refine and enhance their skills.

Jungle Rani Talks: Inspiring Leadership
The Jungle Rani Talks series features powerful conversations with tribal women leaders who share their journeys of resilience and success. These discussions aim to inspire other women to step into leadership roles and take charge of their community's future.
This groundbreaking initiative is the result of a collaboration between the Bharti Institute of Public Policy at ISB and the AJK Mass Communication Research Centre, Jamia Millia Islamia. Together, we aim to amplify Indigenous voices and showcasing the invaluable contributions of tribal communities.
