Distribution of Boundary and Inventory Maps in Korchi, Maharashtra
A significant milestone was achieved in Korchi, Gadchiroli, with the formal distribution of boundary and inventory maps at the Korchi Maha Gram Sabha (MGS) in October 2024. Over the past two years, the Indian School of Business (ISB), in collaboration with the Korchi MGS and Amhi Amchya Arogyasathi, has conducted an extensive boundary-mapping and resource-inventory study, covering 62 Gram Sabhas (GSs) across 16,137.06 hectares.
The study generated boundary maps and resource inventories for key forest products—such as hirda and baheda—enabling greater transparency and improved local governance. Community members expressed their enthusiasm and appreciation upon receiving these maps, recognising them as a crucial step towards strengthening land rights and sustainable resource management.
This initiative underscores the importance of collaborative efforts in forest governance. The continued support from the Initiative on the Forest Economy (IoFE) has helped bridge the gap between community aspirations and data-driven forest management.
The event was a testament to the power of participatory mapping, reinforcing the role of GSs in owning and managing their forest resources while advancing sustainable livelihoods and ecological conservation.
