About the Partnership
On 22 September 2023, the Bharti Institute of Public Policy (BIPP) at the Indian School of Business (ISB) and Srishti Manipal Institute of Art, Design and Technology (SMI) signed a three-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaboratively develop a scalable and sustainable forest economy and livelihood model anchored in Community Forest Resource Rights (CFRR) and women-led enterprises. The collaboration forms part of the broader, landscape-level work led by the Initiative on the Forest Economy (IoFE).
The primary aim of this partnership is to facilitate the exchange of knowledge in the areas of research, teaching, and educational programmes. Both institutions will share academic materials and literature relevant to their research and pedagogical activities as well as facilitate faculty exchanges. Additionally, they will jointly organise short-term educational programmes, seminars, conferences, and workshops on topics of mutual interest.
The MoU includes the following collaborative components:
joint summer internships for students of the Bachelor of Design (B.Des.), Master of Design (M.Des.), Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.), and Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) programmes at SMI;
participation in multi-institutional collaborations to design and develop a multimedia case study platform, which will serve as a new pedagogical tool for imparting education in the humanities, social sciences, development studies, management, and related fields;
joint final-semester dissertation fellowships for M.Des. and M.F.A. students; and
conceptualisation and co-production of documentaries focused on forest governance, the forest economy, livelihoods, agriculture–nutrition convergence, and related themes.
The MoU highlights the vital role of youth participation in research, emphasising how it fosters innovative approaches to a sustainable forest economy and reinforces the importance of fresh perspectives and dynamic solutions in shaping a more resilient future for ecosystems and forest-dependent communities.
